"@nils: can you elaborate on that misbelief? I believe that digital age brings us more than it will cost. Not easy (or impossible) to put that in numbers, because this is about nearly everything (even the basics: health, food, shelter) and it is what the future will bring. Nobody would put the idea on this website to just stop all train networks. But in the beginning some people were very negative about it, and even thought trains were very dangerous. Some people think that innovation means decay, but i think innovation is the only way to go."September 17 2012 on Don't produce any digital Data for one month
"This should be the idea for april next year! In the Netherlands every year at April 30th a big fleamarket is being held allover the country (because of the Queen's birthday, or actually her mother, well long story). And then ask friends and neighbours to give stuff for the flee market. Selling on a flee market is actually a fun thing to do."September 16 2012 on Get rid of all the things you don't need/wear anymore and organize a...
"Because we shouldn't look back to much, because that'll not be the way we're going. Being critical towards everything is good though. There are really bad things going on in Africa where they dig for lithium and other stuff that is being used in digital equipment. I think a lot of future innovations, in food production, health services, education and more lay in the use of digital technology. Stepping back thus also means stepping back in those subjects. Stepping foreward is better. For example: Since the time that electronics became mobile, we are so much more focussing on saving energy. I am sure that a lot of people are trying to find methods of producing, that do not rely on scarse minerals. The solutions are always in front of us, although may be far. And for the 2%, that was about energy use of data centers, not for carbon offset. This is a source http://blogs.computerworld.com/18738/data_centers_use_2_of_u_s_energy_below_forecast So equipment is not included. It's only about data centers. And 2% is really a lot and its merely invisible, therefore an interesting number. So i am still interested in the purpose of your idea! What do you want to reach? As I said: what do you think use more energy/carbonoffset: sending an sms, mail or a real postcard? "September 10 2012 on Don't produce any digital Data for one month
"we can gather information on the best things to do and buy to make your own world a bit better. Tips: nothing is what it seems: is some green energy supplier not providing real green energy: put the information in the wiki. Anybody looking to select an energy supplier can first look here. Actions: who is organizing actions and how can you help? And 1000's of other things might find a place (you don't have to think of everything, because everybody helps you)."September 8 2012 on Open a better world wiki. Everybody can contribute.
"I can think of many things that negative effects of digital data: use of energy, carbon offset, global heating, privacy issues and probably more. But what do you think then of the alternatives? What do you think costs the most: sending a postcard, email or sms? So what is the purpose of your idea? At the same time: 2% of worldwide carbon offset comes from data centers. Those are the places where our google and facebook accounts and this website are residing. I happen to know that this website runs in a green energy center which has very efficient cooling. The amount of data storage and traffic will probably keep on growing. I think improvements can be made here (and they are being made): - More green energy (can go faster by introducing a carbon offset tax to non-green energy) - More efficient use of resources (move from normal servers to virtual servers, saves on total capacity and hardware) - Better software (a nice example: if i put a song on Dropbox, this actually won't take any diskspace, if somebody else has the same songfile on Dropbox. It just recognizes that and they will not save the same file twice on their disks) - Clouds can save space (you might think it costs, but it can save): think of how many diskspace you use to save your music collection. Multiply that by the amount of people having a digital music collection. Now think of something like Spotify. No more millions of times the same files in collections, but one data source for us all."September 7 2012 on Don't produce any digital Data for one month
"@Annette, thank you for responding. My opinion is not about judging this Keep it clean day. I like the idea and hope that the day will be a big success. And at the same time, i still feel the same, about Maarten becoming an instrument for another project. However Maarten would definitely add his own approach to this idea if it wins this month, i still hope that this site enables people to come up with new ideas that are still not covered by existing projects. I expect that most of the voters are not from this site's own community (as they are almost all anonymous - you can see this by clicking on Votes on this page) but all from the Keep it clean day community. And i feel strongly that Annette should have been transparant here in her involvement in this project."August 30 2012 on On the 21th of September the Netherlands celebrate 'KeepItCleanDay!'....

"Patrice, i think you can do somethink to end the crisis in Syria and the poverty in Africa, or whatever big. And ofcourse you cannot do that by yourself, you need to join forces. Every existing big movement has one time just started by one or a few individuals who had a believe in a solution, just like Amnesty has been founded by one single laywer in London. I would think of this platform as a nice start to change something that we as individuals find very difficult to change. This is a group of intelligent, progressive people who are all willing to spend time to improve the world, let's use that power to make a real difference. And for the animals in shelters: let's not increase the number of pet owners, let just people who really want a pet choose to get it from a shelter. And improve the life of animals in shelter, by for example bring children from schools to the shelters, to play with the animals. Good for children and good for the animals."August 13 2012 on Adopt a pet. And convince at least 10 people to adopt a pet too....
"I agree that what I say is way too big and difficult. But at least to begin with (and this is a call to everyone) put your vote where your mouth is. It doesn't matter what you think of Europe, but it is the place where really a lot of international trade regulations are being made. So vote for parties that try to bring equality to trade regulations. And put your money where your mouth is too. These are problems that are much more complicated and highly abstract compared to a lot of issues that are being dealt with on this website, but i sincerely believe that these kind of issues are very very important. A big role in international trade is ofcourse for big companies (Nestlé, Shell, Unilever, P&G, etc). We should encourage these companies to work as sustainable as possible - not only focus on sweet & small local production. Those small scaled initiatives are simply not able to feed the world, not even if there where multiples of them. We need those arrogant, unfriendly multinationals, we can't beat them, but we can change them. This is for example done by this organisation http://www.idhsustainabletrade.com/ "July 24 2012 on people save money, go to some poor country, make a lot of hot soups,...
"i believe that really helping people in poor countries lays not in solacing people by giving soup and share our heart with their children. It lays merely in helping people to educate their children, by removing unfair international trade regulations (that favor developed countries), support the countries by becoming more democratic, in other words to remove the inequality."July 22 2012 on people save money, go to some poor country, make a lot of hot soups,...
"hi douglas, you make a reservoir, a big one, which is positioned higher than the flushtank. If the flushtank is empty it opens a faucet, which allows the water to flow in, and it stops automatically by a float. You can just connect the reservoir to the input of the flushtank and the water will flow in due to gravity. You can filter it easily for the water to be clean enough for washing (it's better even than water from the tap, because rainwater contains hardly any calc. And you can make a bigger cleaning installation to be able to use it for drinking purposes. The difference between toilet and all the other purposes is that you need pressure for the other purposes. It'll cost more money."July 9 2012 on Build an rainwater collection system on your roof and connect it to...
